Assigned to the Pacific Fleet upon commissioning in late 1989, K-391 was formally given
the honorific name Kit in April 1993, carrying on the historic Russian submarine name
previously held by an Imperial Navy Kashalot-class submarine. It bore this name until
September 1997, when it was renamed Bratsk.
