in Severodvinsk in February 1982, launched in April 1983, and commissioned into the Northern Fleet in December 1988
as the very first Project 971 hull. Originally named Bars (“Leopard/Panther”), it was renamed Ak Bars (“Snow Leopard”)
in 1998 after establishing sponsorship with the Republic of Tatarstan. Served in the Northern Fleet’s 24th Submarine
Division in Gadzhiyevo until decommissioning in 2008
