Commissioned in 1977 into the Northern Fleet, K-496 was a nuclear-powered strategic submarine carrying 16 ballistic missiles.
It was named Borisoglebsk in 1999. Beyond its strategic role, K-496 became famous in the 2000s for being used as a space
launch platform, firing Volna rockets carrying planetary science payloads
(like the Cosmos 1 solar sail experiment) before its decommissioning in 2008.
